Teen Years

Your Gynecologic care should begin in your teen years. Even for young women who have not had sex and who are not yet considering starting sexual activity, there is much to be gained by seeing a provider of Gynecologic care. A physician, nurse-midwife or nurse practitioner will discuss with you topics including

• normal menstrual cycles
  (and how to recognize when they are not normal)
• normal anatomy
• pain with menstrual periods
• the risks of certain behaviors and protecting yourself

Once a young person is considering having sex, she can safeguard her own good health by discussing

• the first gynecologic exam
• Birth control
• Sexually transmitted infections
• Gardasil vaccination (the HPV vaccine)
