End Your Fear of Sneezing With Pelvic Floor Muscle Training
Do you leak urine when you sneeze, cough or laugh? This common condition affects many women and is caused by a weakness in the muscles that support and surround your pelvic floor. This condition is most often caused by childbirth but can also result from injuries, hormonal changes, aging, muscle de-conditioning and obesity.
For years, the standard of care for every postpartum mom in Europe has been pelvic floor strengthening after delivery. This strengthens and rehabilitates pelvic floor muscles, reduces postpartum incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse and helps restore sexual function. We now offer this program in the comfort and convenience of our office. Our goal is to return you to health and independence.
How does pelvic floor muscle therapy (PFMT) work?
This type of physical therapy helps condition your pelvic floor muscles and the connective tissues that keep your bladder, vagina, uterus and rectum in place. PFMT is painless and it significantly improves symptoms for 70 to 80 percent of patients without side effects. We begin with a complete health assessment to determine the strength of your pelvic floor muscles and which exercises will achieve the best results. We teach patients how to focus on their muscles so exercise is most effective. We then perform pelvic floor stimulation with a special sense that delivers a mild electrical stimulus to pelvic muscles and causes comfortable, timed contractions similar to gentle tapping sensations. We may also use PFMT for:
• Stress incontinence • Urge incontinence • Urinary frequency • Urinary urgency
• Interstitial cystitis • Chronic pelvic pain • Overactive bladder • Frequent nighttime urination • Fecal incontinence • Chronic constipation • Rectal pain • Pelvic floor relaxation • Painful intercourse • Postmenopause atrophy
